The Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics develops improved crop varieties suited to mountain conditions — earlier maturing, more stress tolerant and higher yielding. Facilities include tissue culture, molecular marker and seed technology laboratories.

Research themes span germplasm conservation, hybrid development, biotechnology and participatory varietal selection with local farming communities.
